Third Force News, the leading magazine dedicated to the Scottish voluntary sector, publishes the cover story of Oleg Dmitriev, chairman of Sunflower Scotland. Titled “Sending aid to the eighth pit of hell”, it tells how the Sunflower team learned about the horrific conditions in frontline villages, and how they focussed all their help to those dreadful places.
Third Force News (TFN) is Scotland’s only dedicated daily news outlet for charities and voluntary organisations in Scotland. It is published by the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO).
Since 24th February 2024 marks the dreadful second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, TFN decided to dedicate its February issue to the war, and to the help that Scottish charities have been providing to Ukraine.
Oleg Dmitriev, Sunflower Scotland’s chairman, shared his first-hand experiences. How he went to frontline areas for the first time, how Sunflower witnessed the true scale of the humanitarian catastrophe, and how they evolved to send help to those most needy. What people in Ukraine’s war zones endured was beyond belief. These experiences were traumatic to Oleg and other volunteers as well.
The article concludes with five lessons, which other war-zone charities can use to improve their efficiency or avoid mistakes.
We thank TFN for the opportunity to share the story. It’s so important to remind everyone in Scotland how horrible war is. That now, after two years of horror, people in Ukraine need help more than ever. Please read the February 2024 issue of TFN with the cover story about the work of Sunflower Scotland.
