“The Mayor of Kalymnos” by John Barrett
This fictional novel was written by John Barrett, the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Edinburgh West 2001 – 2010.
It is set on the Greek island of Kalymnos. The main character of the book, John, decides to leave the world of politics far behind him and to retire on the island.
But soon he finds himself helping islanders to improve their struggling tourism sector and fight the corrupt mayor. John makes friends and enemies, and he is wrongly accused of theft.
The islanders ask ask John for help. He sees the island dying on its feet, being destroyed by some of its own people, greed, ignorance, nepotism, and its elected politicians bleeding it dry. John decides to stand for election – for the position of Mayor of Kalymnos.

On the 19th day after Russian’s invasion of Ukraine, Norwegian poet and filmmaker Odveig Klyve posted a spontaneous poem addressed to Putin online.
Two months later, it had spurred over 100 translations and variations in 70 tongues from people across the world. This book records the phenomenon.
