Meet the director
Aaron MacCarley lives and works in Kyiv, Ukraine. Originally from Los Angeles, California, he holds a BA degree in philosophy. Aaron studied at Catalyst Art Institute in Berlin, having produced 12 short films and won the Golden Gorilla award for 2017. In 2021 he moved to Madrid where he joined a Master’s Program in VFX & Motion Graphics, graduating in summer 2022.
Since February 2023 Aaron has been living in Kyiv, where he manages a production team. Over the year he travelled to the most terrifying places of the Ukraine war. He filmed the real struggle of people in Ukraine, as well as the efforts of volunteers helping them. Aaron filmed the most dangerous scenes himself because of the risk to the film crew.
About the film
In the midst of the ongoing war with Russia, civilians and volunteers in Ukraine have united to selflessly help the country in whatever ways they can. Sunflowers in the Rain documents an array of stories of mostly young Ukrainian civilians and foreign volunteers who work across the length and breadth of Ukraine, and who have found purpose in the common quest to help defeat Russia.
I look forward to seeing this film. I’ve been aware of Sunflower Scotland since it began, and I support its work.
