Sunflower Scotland delivers pneumatic NHS treatment bed and ten walking frames to “Patriot” rehabilitation centre in east Ukraine, 30 miles from the front. This is our second donation to this centre. They tirelessly help Ukrainian veterans with war wounds to get their lives back.
Patriot is a rehabilitation centre in Pershotravensk – a small miners town in east Ukraine. Located on the border with the Donbas region, it is only 30 miles away from the war zone. When Russia invaded, many women and men from Pershotravensk volunteered to defend Ukraine. Unfortunately, too many have sustained terrible wounds, some lost their arms and legs.
Vitaliy Oboronko is a weightlifting champion. He is also a veteran, who defended his homeland for two years. He fought in some of the most dreadful battles, including the defence of Pubizhne and the second battle of Lyman. After returning home, he opened the rehab in order to help his fellow veterans.
In April, Sunflower Scotland delivered eight exercise machines to “Patriot”. Vitaliy started using them without delay for physiotherapy, helping those recovering from horrible wounds to re-learn how to use their arms and legs (see his first report).
Recently Vitaliy asked us for a medical treatment bed which he could use to for stretching exercises. We were really lucky that NHS Scotland donated such bed to us – out most sincere thanks! To help Vitaliy’s rehabilitation effort, we decided to deliver it. We loaded the bed on a Transit van, and drove 3400km from Edinburgh to Pershotravensk.
Almost immediately after receiving the bed, Vitaliy started to use it for the benefit of his patients. Here is a photo of a veteran who received a bullet wound in the head.
The man can barely walk due to the neurological injury. Vitaliy, working tirelessly, is helping him to relearn how to use his legs. Hopefully, he will walk again.
In addition, we delivered ten walking aids, which will help the wounded veterans who need support while they undergo rehabilitation.
