On the 23rd September 2024 Sunflower Scotland delivered hand-made quilts, baby hats and knitted jackets. They were crafted with lots of love by Scottish volunteers in Dunbar, Hamilton, Torphichen and other parts of Scotland. In addition, Scots donated baby bottles, breast pumps and period pads, in short the most essential items a new mum needs when she brings a new lift into this world. We gave them to 28 new mothers in Kryvyi Rih, a city which has welcomed 80,000 refugees and which is regularly hit by missiles.
On the Monday morning, Sunflower visited the local maternity ward. We spoke with the nurses, and agreed that they would give our aid to the 28 mums who struggle: refugees and poor families from Kryvyi Rih itself.
Just two days before that, Kryvyi Rih was hit by a Russian missile blast which killed a boy, 12, two elderly women and one man, and damaged a number of houses. Life in Kryvyi Rih is tough. It is regularly targeted by missiles.
Back in Scotland, we have been working with many wonderful volunteers. A group from Dunbar made an incredibly large and thoughtful donation of hand-knitted baby jackets, small baby blankets. they fundraised to buy breast pumps and top-quality anti-colic bottles (not the cheap ones but those that really help!).
One most wonderful volunteer from South Lanarkshire knitted 50 sets of baby hats and matching mittens. A church group in Torphichen organised a coffee morning to fundraise for this mission….we were really blessed to receive such outstanding contributions.
Sunflower’s team arranged the donated baby items into 28 sets, so that each mum would get roughly the same things. Iryna and Oleg prepared sets and packed them for the trip.
After driving over 2000 miles from Edinburgh, Oleg reached Kryvyi Rih. We delivered aid to the disabled kids on Sunday, but we had to wait until Monday morning to get into the maternity ward.
At 8 am we met with the nurses, and gave them all 28 sets (we wouldn’t be allowed in the maternity setting). The nurses distributed our aid between the mothers, and sent us photos.
