On the 22nd September 2024, Sunflower Scotland brought humanitarian aid to 47 families with disabled children in Kryvyi Rih. Most of them have Down’s syndrome and other disabilities, but they are really wonderful personalities and we are blessed we can support them in this terrible hour. We were able to do it only thanks to our wonderful donor Fingers Crossed – an IT consulting company from Barcelona. They decided to fund our project with regular donations, so that these kids can get regular support.

The situation in Kryvyi Rih and wellbeing of disabled children
Lately Kryvyi Rih was hit by several missile attacks. Children and young adults with mental disabilities struggle in normal life. But when missiles fall from the sky and blasts shake the walls, they are terribly traumatised.
On the 27th August the city survived a massive, horrific attack. A 3-star hotel in the city centre was totally obliterated leaving several people dead on the spot and many wounded.
We arrived on the 22nd September, just a day after another major attack took place. On the 21st September a Russian missile hit Kryvyi Rih instantly killing a 12-year-old boy and two elderly women. A 50-year-old man who was wounded died later that night in the hospital. Another missile blast shook the city on the 27th September taking more innocent lives.
These are only examples from a continuous string of attacks on this totally peaceful city. Kryvyi Rih is not at the front line. All missile strikes are acts of terrorism designed to torture the local population of this megapolis, spread terror and despair.
Comfort Food for Emotional Support
This time our aid package was a bit different. We not only provided staple food like buckwheat and sunflower oil, but some sweets as well. Why did we do it? We decided that it was right to support the kids emotionally, by including some Ukraine-made sweets. We knew that parents will prioritise the basic stuff and make sure there is bread on the table. It was only right that we should do something extra, which parents normally won’t have the money for.

Saving donors’ money by buying locally
We buy Ukraine-produced food locally. It’s high-quality food that the locals know and like. It’s also massively cheaper than our food in the UK or Europe. As a result, we are saving our donor’s money, and stretch the same amount of donations to help more people.
