Sunflower Scotland delivered washing and cleaning supplies to residents of small villages: Lozova, Virivka and Baksheivka. Found near Vovchansk, in the north-east Kharkiv Oblast’, where the war nightmare drags on. To this day, this area suffers from daily artillery shelling from the russian side of the border.
Lozova, Virivka and Baksheivka were occupied between February and September 2022, when the invaders were driven off by ZSU (Ukraine’s defence forces). But the occupation left deep scars. Poverty and hardship are heartbreaking. We were happy that we could help, and give at least some support to these poor people.
Halyna, from the local administration, explained to Vitaliy (our volunteer) that while people in the area recently received food aid. But getting washing supplies was a big problem for them. The cost of essentials like washing powder, soap or toothpaste is quite steep. Stape pension in the rural areas is about 3000 hryvnia per month (about £70, or £2.33 per day). Working-age people lost their jobs, when agri-businesses collapsed. Sometimes the older person’s pension is the only money a family gets.
We decided to give people a hand a bought washing and cleaning supplies. All the items we bought were made in Ukraine, because we believe in supporting the country’s fragile economy. Each aid bag contained:
- Washing powder “Frish” 400 g x 3 pcs per bag
- Shampoo 500 ml
- Toothpaste 1 tube
- Soap 1 bar (70 g)
- Toilet paper 1 roll
- Kitchen cleaning liquid 1 bottle (500 ml)
- Bathroom cleaning powder 1 box (500 g)
We purchased 305 sets of cleaning and washing supplies for the villages of Virivka, Lozova, Baksheivka and Novooaleksandrivka. This delivery was made to the first three villages. Since our jeep could not carry all supplies at once, we decided to bring the rest of supplies to Novooaleksandrivka later this week. The cost of the supplies was around £2,000, and our overall cost – including packaging, getting pallets delivered from the shops, fuel, etc – was about £2,350.
We want to send cordial thanks to or Scottish donors. As you see, we deliver your help to those who need it. Sometimes in very difficult and dangerous places, even when there is a risk of enemy bombardment.
