12 February 2025 – Sunflower delivered a van load of emergency ambulance items to a stabilisation point, or “stabik”, 10 km behind the Vovchansk front (north-east Kharkiv region). These items were kindly donated by a specialised medical charity PHCAW, Ipswich, England, and delivered by Sunflower from Edinburgh directly to the doctor’s hands. This practical help will save lives.

Stabilisation points are first aid hubs just behind the front line. Here, the wounded soldiers from the trenches receive first aid. Medics “stabilise” them, so they can survive a 100 km journey to the hospital in Kharkiv.
The doctors have VERY limited medical supplies. That’s why they were really happy to receive British ambulance equipment, stretchers, bandages, catheters etc.

We are truly grateful to Prehospital Care & Aid Worldwide (PHCAW) for donating a ton of emergency ambulance equipment and medical supplies.

Why stabilisation point?
Stabilisation points (“stabik”) perform the absolutely critical role. Here, critically-wounded women and men receive prehospital aid. Men will live or die, depending on the quality of care they receive here.
When someone is injure and bleeding, they can only survive a short trip. Sending them in an ambulance directly to a Kharkiv hospital will be fatal.
United 24 Media journalists wrote an eye-opening report from a stabik in a different location.

We experienced it first-hand. The road to Kharkiv is very rough. It is 110 km through dirt and fields taking 3-4 hours. Some of it is what remained of an old tarmac road, with meter-deep potholes.
The journey is manageable on a dry day. When it rains, the fields become rivers of mud, and ambulances get stuck. They would be towed by the passing vehicles. But it all takes time, and when someone inside is bleeding, time is something you don’t have.

In the middle of the journey, there is a blown-up bridge through the river. In short, it’s really hard to get the wounded directly from the front to the hospital in Kharkiv.
That’s why they need to be patched up near the front, before they can go on the trip to the hospital in a safe zone.
Words and respect and gratitude
Our heart goes to the Ukrainian people who are paying the ultimate price to protect their families, and to the wonderful frontline medics who save lives with very limited equipment. They are the true heroes.
Sunflower helps to save lives, and we risk our own lives because it’s important. Please support our work with a donation (we have 0% admin fees, all the money goes to help Ukraine). Thank you!
