This April, our team donated three vehicles to Ukraine. Sunflower gifted a disabled-friendly Renault van to a Ukrainian charity Schira Sprava, to transport patients from frontline villages to hospitals. A Mitsubishi Shogun Sport and a 4×4 Skoda Scout off-roader were given to ZSU. We drove 3400 km from Scotland, and all vehicles were loaded with medical supplies. We delivered all vehicles directly to end-users, without intermediaries. All vehicles received full customs clearance and were officially marked “humanitarian aid – resale forbidden”.
Patient Transport: from frontline villages to city hospital
Our partner charity Schira Sprava contacted us about a serious issue. Old people from Kherson villages were cut off from medical help. Area along the Dnipro river was being attacked by the Russian invaders. The state ambulance service avoided the area, and people with severe medical conditions were left behind.
We contacted a wonderful Scottish charity [name withheld for privacy reasons]. They decided to fund the mission, for which we are sincerely grateful. We purchased a specially-made Renault van, suitable for transporting a wheelchair or a stretcher.
The Sunflower team delivered the Patient Transport van to Kryvyi Rih in south Ukraine, where Shira Sprava is based.
4×4 vehicles for Ukraine’s defenders
In March, we met with the 151st battalion, near the front line beyond Lyman. This part of the front was under constant attacks. The Russian positions were only 80 metres away, and they were attacking on foot every day.
The frontline roads were awful, with craters from gliding air bombs on each side. Even the best vehicles don’t survive for long. Boys asked us for a 4×4 truck, and we decided to help them out.
While our chairman Oleg Dmitriev was in Ukraine, he was contacted by the 129th brigade. Two of their vehicles were just destroyed by the enemy, and unfortunately several defenders lost their lives. They asked if we could help.
Sunflower Scotland special advisor, ret. Major General Mark MacCarley, donated funds to buy a 4×4 truck for the 151st battalion. Back in Edinburgh, we sourced a Mitsubishi Shogun Sport truck.
A few days later, an incredibly kind person phoned us and offered to donate a 4×4 Skoda Scout. Although it is not a pickup, it has excellent off-road capabilities.
We quickly painted cars in camouflage green, and our good supporters Lochrin Autos fixed all mechanical faults and prepared for the long journey to Ukraine. Tyres on the Mitsubishi truck were worn out, and would be useless for the terrible dirt roads of Lyman. We fitted new off-road Toyo tyres, to make sure the vehicle can do the job and not be stuck in the mud.
Donating medical supplies
The Sunflower team took the three vehicles to Ukraine. After driving for four days and 3400 km, first of all we visited the Kryvyi Rih Regional hospital, and donated medical supplies: paramedic splints, stretchers, surgical masks, hospital uniforms, catheters, airways, two nebuliser machines, and much more.
Donating vehicles to Ukraine
After we transferred the vehicles to the end-users. We met face-to-face with Schira sprava, and with the Ukrainian soldiers we were donating the vehicles to.
We donated the Skoda to the 129th brigade.
The Shogun was given to the 151st battalion of the Konotop brigade.
The Renault van was donated to Shira Sprava. This Ukrainian charity would use it to transport patients who were left behind in the Kherson Region, to hospitals for urgent medical treatment. Please read our report on the “Patient Transport” project with examples of work carried out by Schira Sprava.
Full customs clearance and full paperwork
We take very close attention and do full customs clearance, and make sure the vehicles are transferred to the regiments and to the official Ukrainian charities, according to law.
You can see the three British V5C forms for the three vehicles, with the official stamp “Humanitarian Aid – Resale Forbidden”.
