Here’s our activity report for August 2023
Two Food deliveries to villages in the Izium district, Kharkiv Oblast’
Sunflower Scotland delivered food aid to 115 families in Horokhovatka and 98 families in Bakhtyn. Set on the west bank of the Oskil river, Horokhovatka and Bakhtyn are only 20 km from the front line, and people live in constant danger.
Two fantastic local volunteers – Brian Williamson and Vitaliy Grygorov – drove a Transit van with aid. Our thanks to Refugease, a British charity, for providing the van (we paid for the fuel and some snacks for the road :).
Sunflower Scotland purchased all aid in Ukraine, from an independent local wholesale shop. All food was made by local small producers: we believe in supporting Ukraine’s economy and sustaining people of Ukraine.
Brand new food bag
In August, we changed the contents of Sunflower’s “food bags”. We have reduced the volume of pasta, and swapped barley for bulgur (tastier). We have added soap, washing powder and toothpaste. The idea behind this change is that people in dangerous villages will get not only food, but also essential household products. This way, they will have less reasons to travel to the shops, and therefore will not risk their lives as much in the frontline area.
The cost of the food bag increased from around 275 hryvnia to 316 hryvnia (not including delivery expenses). But we think it’s totally worth it.
4×4 truck to ZSU
Sunflower delivered a 4×4 truck, 3-door Mitsubishi Pajero to help ZSU protects civilian lives at the Eastern Front. As always, we provided the vehicle directly to a named person in Ukraine, rather than sending it to a regiment. This way we are certain it will be used for the right purpose.
We sourced the truck from an Edinburgh garage, in good technical condition. Sunflower’s volunteers drove it to Poland, and from there it was taken to Ukraine and given to the soldier’s brother. In Lviv, a local mechanic inspected the Mitsubishi Pajero very thoroughly, fixed what needed fixing and replaced quite a few parts. Finally, the vehicle reached the Eastern Front. It is now helping to save lives.
